The Frederiksborg Ferry is included on the Discover card, not Hop. It runs a half-hour circuit of the castle lake, from mid-May to mid-September only.
The Discover card covers the crossing and the train up to Hillerød. No fare is published for it, which is worth explaining first.
Half an hour round the lake the castle stands in, billed by the operator as Denmark's most beautiful nautical mile. Short, and better placed than it sounds.
Three landings — Hillerød Torv, Rosenhaven and Barokhaven — and you may step off and back on at all of them. That turns a thirty-minute circuit into a way of moving between the town, the rose garden and the Baroque garden without walking back on yourself.
The route passes the Baroque garden with its clipped trees and royal monograms cut into the planting. Those patterns are laid out to be read from a distance, and the water is the distance they were designed for.
This is not a day out. It is thirty minutes bolted onto a Frederiksborg Castle visit that would otherwise end at the gate — which is exactly the kind of thing a card is good for, because nobody would plan a trip to Hillerød around it.
Two things will stop this boat sailing, and neither is announced far in advance. Confirmed against stromma.com.
Hillerød is 40 minutes north of Copenhagen by train, then a 10-minute bus — about 50 minutes door to door, and all of it on the Discover card.
All three are included on the same card, so the only cost of adding them is the time. For the full list, see every attraction the Copenhagen Card covers.
The Museum of National History in a Renaissance castle on three islets, with the chapel, the Great Hall and 500 years of portraits.
The house at Rungstedlund where Karen Blixen wrote, kept as she left it, with the grounds running down to the sound.
A raw concrete hall on open heath, with the sculptor’s own work inside and a statue park scattered across the landscape around it.
The Discover card includes the ferry and the journey up to Hillerød, along with 80+ more attractions and unlimited public transport across the Capital Region.
The Discover card covers the half-hour round trip and all three landings, plus the train to Hillerød and the bus out. The operator does not publish a fare, so this page states no figure. Frederiksborg Castle is on the card too, as its own attraction. The Hop card covers none of it.
It sails every day in season, Mondays included, between 14 May and 15 September, with a short autumn run from 10 to 18 October. Outside those dates there is no boat. Weather can stop it on any day — the flags at the bridges are what tell you.
Nothing needs booking. Show the QR code in the Copenhagen Card app at the landing and step aboard. Departures from Hillerød Torv run on the hour and the half hour, with the last at 4:30pm, so the timing is worth checking before the castle rather than after.
One scan per attraction applies, so this is a single trip per card — but you may get off and back on at all three landings within it, which is what makes the circuit useful rather than just scenic.
Show the live QR code in the Copenhagen Card app at the entrance and let staff scan it. Your booking confirmation email is not your card, and a screenshot of the QR code will not scan — it has to be the app itself, which works offline once activated.
