Inside

What to see at the Church of Our Saviour

A baroque church on Christianshavn with a black-and-gold spire you climb on the outside. Allow forty minutes, most of it upward.

Highlight 1
The external staircase

The last stretch of the climb runs outside the spire, winding round it in the open air to a gilded globe at the top. There is nothing else like it in Copenhagen, and it is the whole reason to come.

Highlight 2
The view

Ninety metres up, over the harbour, the copper roofs of the old city and straight down into Christiania. On a clear day the bridge to Sweden is visible. This is the best view in the city and it is not close.

Highlight 3
The church itself, free to anyone

The baroque interior with its carved organ and the altarpiece costs nothing to walk into, card or no card. Worth ten minutes at the bottom before or after the climb.

Before you visit

Read before you go

Two things decide whether the climb happens: the month, and whether you are up to 400 steps. Confirmed against vorfrelserskirke.dk.

February to December — January is closed
  • The tower opens every day from February to December, 9am to 8pm. There is no Monday closure inside that season.
  • It does not open in January at all, and it closes on 24 and 25 December. A January trip cannot include this at any price.
  • That makes it one of the venues to check before building a winter itinerary — see how many days of card to buy.
400 steps, and the last of them outdoors
  • It is 400 steps to the top, and the final section is the external staircase winding around the outside of the spire.
  • The stairs narrow as they climb and the outer section is exposed to the weather. In wind or rain it is a genuinely different proposition.
  • There is no lift and no step-free route — this is a climb rather than a viewing platform.
What it costs, and what does not
  • The tower is €9 (69 DKK) for an adult without a card. Children aged 5 to 14 pay 20 DKK and under-5s are not charged.
  • The church itself is free to everyone, so the card is buying the climb, not the building.
  • Both cards cover it, and the tower can also be booked online in advance if you would rather fix a time.
Getting there

How to get to the Church of Our Saviour

Sankt Annæ Gade on Christianshavn, five minutes from the metro. Entry is on both cards; the journey is only on one.

Copenhagen Card
Discover card
✓ Metro M1 or M2 to Christianshavn, then about five minutes on foot. The fare is covered.
✓ About 20 minutes on foot from the city centre across Knippelsbro.
✓ Harbour buses and city buses serve Christianshavn and are covered on Discover.
✓ From the airport — M2 direct to Christianshavn, roughly 12 minutes. Covered.
Copenhagen Card
Hop card
✓ The tower climb is included on the Hop card — it is covered by both.
✓ The hop-on hop-off bus stops on Christianshavn.
✗ The metro and harbour buses are not on the Hop card, so an airport arrival is a separate ticket.
Christianshavn and across the water
  • Copenhagen Contemporary is out at Refshaleøen on bus 2A, in a former welding hall.
  • The Black Diamond is across the harbour on Slotsholmen, a fifteen-minute walk.
  • Christiania is immediately behind the church, and you will have looked down into it from the spire.

Common questions

Church of Our Saviour — card FAQ

Is Church of Our Saviour included with the Copenhagen Card?

Both cards cover the tower climb, which is €9 (69 DKK) for an adult without one. Children aged 5 to 14 pay 20 DKK. The church itself is free to everyone regardless, so the card is paying for the 400-step climb rather than for entry to the building.

Is Church of Our Saviour open on Mondays?

The tower opens every day from February to December, 9am to 8pm, with no Monday closure. It does not open in January at all, and it closes on 24 and 25 December — so a New Year trip cannot include the climb at any price.

Do I need to book Church of Our Saviour in advance with the Copenhagen Card?

Nothing has to be booked — show the QR code in the Copenhagen Card app and start climbing. Slots can be reserved online at vorfrelserskirke.dk if you would rather fix a time, which is worth doing on a clear summer weekend.

Can I visit Church of Our Saviour twice on the same Copenhagen Card?

One scan per attraction is the rule on every card type, so Church of Our Saviour can be visited once. Leaving and coming back the same day means buying a separate ticket at the door. Plan the visit as a single stretch rather than splitting it across a day.

How do I get into Church of Our Saviour with the Copenhagen Card?

Show the live QR code in the Copenhagen Card app at the tower entrance inside the church. The church door itself is open to everyone without any ticket, so the scan happens at the foot of the stairs rather than at the street.
