What the Copenhagen Card covers at ARKEN

The Discover card covers entry and the whole journey out. The Hop card covers neither, and that is the distinction this page turns on.

Copenhagen Card
What's included
Discover only
✓ Full entry to the museum — the permanent collection and whatever temporary exhibitions are running
✓ The sculpture park and the grounds, out towards the beach
✓ The S-train to Ishøj and bus 128 to the door, both covered on Discover
At your own cost
Not included
Both cards
✗ The Hop card — Ishøj is outside the city centre, and the Hop card excludes day trips entirely
✗ Guided tours arranged separately
✗ The café and the shop
Inside

What to see at ARKEN

A contemporary art museum built like a beached ship on the coast south of Copenhagen, with a sculpture park and the sea behind it. Allow two hours, plus the journey.

Highlight 1
The building

ARKEN was designed as a wreck run aground — long white hull, sloping decks, a spine of a gallery running through the middle of it. It is one of the more committed pieces of architecture in the country, and it is as much the reason to come as the art inside.

Highlight 2
The collection and the temporary shows

Contemporary and modern art, with large temporary exhibitions that get the run of the main gallery. What is on changes substantially through the year, so the programme is worth checking before you commit an afternoon and a train journey.

Highlight 3
The sculpture park and the beach

The grounds run out towards Køge Bay, with sculpture set in the landscape and a beach beyond it. In summer this turns a museum visit into an afternoon out, which is not something the city-centre galleries can offer.

Before you visit

Read before you go

Two things decide whether this trip works: which card you are holding, and what day of the week it is. Confirmed against arken.dk.

Discover only — and the journey is the reason why
  • ARKEN is not on the Hop card. The Hop card covers 40+ city-centre attractions and the sightseeing bus, and Ishøj is neither.
  • On Discover, the S-train and bus 128 are both covered, so the trip costs nothing beyond the card you already hold.
  • That makes the gap between the two cards wider here than the admission price suggests — see what each card covers on public transport.
The weekend opens earlier than the weekday
  • Saturday and Sunday, 9am to 5pm. Tuesday to Friday it opens later, at 11am, and Thursday runs to 9pm.
  • Closed Mondays, all year. If your only free day is a Monday, see what stays open.
  • A 9am opening at the weekend is rare among Copenhagen museums and worth using — the galleries are genuinely quiet in the first hour.
Getting from the station, and what it costs
  • Adult admission without a card is €19 (145 DKK); students pay 125 DKK and under-18s are free.
  • Bus 128 runs from Ishøj station to the door and is covered on Discover.
  • The ARKEN WALK is 2.6 km from the station if you would rather walk it — a marked path, and a reasonable option in decent weather.
Getting there

How to get to ARKEN

Ishøj, about 30 minutes south of Copenhagen by S-train and then a bus. The whole journey is on the Discover card.

Copenhagen Card
Discover card
✓ S-train line A or E to Ishøj, roughly 30 minutes from Copenhagen Central. Covered.
✓ Then bus 128 to the museum, a few minutes to the door. Also covered.
✓ Or walk the ARKEN WALK, 2.6 km of marked path from the station to the beach.
✓ From the airport — train to Copenhagen Central, then the S-train south. All covered on Discover.
Copenhagen Card
Hop card
✗ ARKEN is not included on the Hop card at all — neither the entry nor the journey.
✗ The hop-on hop-off routes stay inside the city and do not reach Ishøj.
✗ If ARKEN matters to your trip, the Discover card is the one that covers it — see our card comparison.
Where it fits in a card day
  • Allow half a day. The journey each way plus two hours inside fills an afternoon comfortably and does not leave room for much else.
  • Copenhagen Contemporary is the other large contemporary space on the card, out at Refshaleøen on the opposite side of the city.
  • Two big contemporary venues in one day is a lot of walking in two directions — see the transport guide before trying it.

Nearby attractions also on your card

All three are included on the same card, so the only cost of adding them is the time. For the full list, see every attraction the Copenhagen Card covers.

Vast installation art in a former welding hall at Refshaleøen, with the space to show work nothing in the city centre could fit.

Art Museum · City centre · Allow 2 hrs

Glyptoteket

Carl Jacobsen's collection of ancient sculpture and French painting, around a glass-roofed winter garden beside Tivoli.

Closed Mondays. Thursday opening runs to 9pm.

Common questions

ARKEN Museum — card FAQ

Is ARKEN Museum included with the Copenhagen Card?

Entry is free on the Copenhagen Card Discover, covering the collection, the temporary exhibitions and the sculpture park. The Hop card does not include ARKEN — Ishøj is a day trip, which that card excludes. Adult admission without a card is €19 (145 DKK).

Is ARKEN Museum open on Mondays?

ARKEN closes every Monday, all year. It opens Tuesday to Friday from 11am to 5pm with Thursday running to 9pm, and at weekends from 9am to 5pm — the weekend opening is two hours earlier than the weekday one, which catches people out in both directions.

Do I need to book ARKEN Museum in advance with the Copenhagen Card?

Nothing needs booking. Show the QR code in the Copenhagen Card app at the desk and walk in. Bus 128 from Ishøj station is covered on the same card, so there is no ticket to buy at either end.

Can I visit ARKEN Museum twice on the same Copenhagen Card?

One scan per attraction applies, so this is a single visit per card. Given the journey is around 30 minutes each way, most people build an afternoon around it rather than planning to return.

How do I get into ARKEN Museum with the Copenhagen Card?

Show the live QR code in the Copenhagen Card app at the entrance and let staff scan it. Your booking confirmation email is not your card, and a screenshot of the QR code will not scan — it has to be the app itself, which works offline once activated.
