Inside the castle

What to see at Rosenborg Castle

The castle has three floors visited in a fixed route — Treasury in the basement, royal apartments on the ground and first floors. Allow 1.5–2 hours inside.

Highlight 1
The Crown Jewels and Royal Treasury — Christian IV's crown set with 2,000 stones, the Order of the Elephant in gold and diamonds, and the full royal regalia. The most visited room in the castle.
Highlight 2
The Knights' Hall on the first floor — three silver coronation thrones from the 17th century, guarded by silver lions cast in 1665. The tapestries behind the thrones depict Danish naval victories.
Highlight 3
Christian IV's personal apartments on the ground floor — rooms preserved almost unchanged since the 1600s. The Winter Room's panelled oak interior and the Glass Cabinet with Venetian curiosities are the standouts.
Suggested visit — 1.5 hours

Start in the Treasury while you are fresh — it is the most crowded part and best seen first. Work up through the floors to finish in the Knights' Hall.

Head straight down on entry. Crown Jewels, royal regalia, and the Order of the Elephant. Allow 30–40 minutes. This fills up fast — visiting first means you avoid the main crowd.

Ground floor — Royal Apartments
Christian IV's bedchamber, the Winter Room, the Glass Cabinet. Rooms are small and the fixed route moves steadily. Allow 20–25 minutes.
10:05am
First floor — Knights' Hall
The grandest room in the castle. Three coronation thrones, silver lions, royal portraits, and the tapestry wall. Allow 20 minutes. Exit through the gift shop back to the garden.
10:30am
King's Garden
Free to all — no card needed. Walk south through the garden toward Nørreport and on to SMK National Gallery, or continue east to Amalienborg for the noon changing of the guard.
Before you visit

Read before you go

The entry process at Rosenborg is different from most Copenhagen Card venues. Card holders cannot pre-book a time slot online — you collect it on arrival. Here is exactly how it works.

Arrive at the ticket office — not the entry gate. The ticket office is to the left of the main entrance. Join the ticket office queue, not the visitor entry queue.

Show the QR code in your Copenhagen Card app. Staff will scan it and issue a paper timed-entry slot. You cannot book this in advance — it is issued on the day only.

Wait for your slot. If the next available slot is not immediate, spend the time in the King's Garden (free, no card needed) or walk two minutes to SMK National Gallery — also included on your card.

Return for your slot and show the QR code again at the entry door. You will need to store any bag larger than 15×23×15 cm in the free lockers before entering.
Peak season: In July and August, slots for the first hour fill within minutes of opening. Arrive at 09:00 sharp. Arriving at 11:00 may mean a 14:00 slot.
Bag size limit
Bags larger than 15×23×15 cm must go in lockers at the entrance. No large daypacks, no suitcases inside the castle. Lockers are free.
Accessibility
The castle has no lift and features narrow historic doorways. The interior is not wheelchair accessible. The King's Garden surrounding the castle is fully accessible.

Photography
Photography is permitted in most rooms. No flash in the Treasury. Tripods are not allowed inside the castle.

Metro M1 / M2 to Nørreport Station Exit toward Øster Voldgade — the castle is a 5-minute walk northeast. Nørreport is also a hub for S-trains, regional trains and city buses.

From Copenhagen Central Station Take metro M1 or M2 — two stops to Nørreport. Journey time approximately 5 minutes.

From Copenhagen Airport (CPH) Metro direct to Nørreport — 13 to 15 minutes, then a 5-minute walk to the castle. No transfer needed. Airport metro is covered by the Discover card.

Classic Copenhagen Hop-On Hop-Off bus The Classic route stops near the Rosenborg Castle entrance and runs daily year-round. Board anywhere on the route and alight at the castle stop.

Rosenborg Castle — Card FAQ

Can I pre-book a time slot at Rosenborg Castle with the Copenhagen Card?

No. Card holders cannot book online in advance. You must arrive at the ticket office — to the left of the main entrance — show the QR code in your Copenhagen Card app, and collect a same-day timed slot. Arrive at opening time — 09:00 in July and August, 10:00 the rest of the year — to get the earliest available slot. In peak season, the first-hour slots fill within minutes of opening.

Is the Crown Jewels visit included with the Copenhagen Card?

Yes. The Treasury — which houses the Crown Jewels, royal regalia, and the Order of the Elephant — is fully included with both the Discover and Hop cards. It is accessed as part of the standard castle visit, not a separate ticket. There is no extra charge for the Treasury.

Are children free at Rosenborg Castle?

Children under 18 enter free. They do not need a Copenhagen Card or a separate ticket. Just bring them along — no additional steps at the ticket office are required for children in your group.

Is Rosenborg Castle open on Mondays?

Only in summer. The castle is open daily from mid-June through mid-September. Outside that period it is closed on Mondays. If you are visiting on a Monday outside summer, Christiansborg Royal Reception Rooms is a card-included alternative worth considering — check current opening hours before you go.

Is the King's Garden (Kongens Have) included in the Copenhagen Card?

The King's Garden is a public park — it is free for everyone, with no card or ticket required. It surrounds Rosenborg Castle and is open year-round from early morning. It is the best place to spend time while waiting for your timed entry slot, particularly in summer when the garden is at its best.
