Inside

What to see at MACA

Contemporary and street art a few minutes from Amalienborg, in a part of town otherwise given over to palaces. Allow an hour and a half.

Highlight 1
Banksy and Street Art: The Early Years

The 2026 exhibition, covering the period before the name became a brand — rare drawings, stencils, photographs and paintings. It is the reason most people come this year, and it is inside the standard ticket rather than sold as an add-on.

Highlight 2
Who else is on the walls

Basquiat, Warhol, Haring, Kusama, Hirst and KAWS hang alongside the New York graffiti writers who came before Banksy — Futura 2000, Dondi, Lady Pink — and the street artists who came after, Shepard Fairey, STIK, VHILS and Retna among them. Work made for walls, shown in a gallery: whether that survives the move is the interesting question, and the museum does not pretend it is settled.

Highlight 3
The contrast with the neighbourhood

Toldbodgade sits between Amalienborg and the harbour, among the most formal streets in the city. Walking out of the royal quarter into this is a sharper change of register than any museum-to-museum walk in the centre.

Before you visit

Read before you go

The opening pattern here is unusual and one coverage question is open. Confirmed against macamuseum.com and the 2026 Copenhagen museums folder.

Open every day, on hours that change with the season
  • April to September: 10:30am to 8pm. October to March: 10:30am to 6pm.
  • No Monday closure at any point in the year, which puts it in the small group of card venues you can rely on at the start of a week.
  • The 8pm summer closing makes it a workable evening stop when the royal collections nearby have shut at 5pm — useful when you are working out how many days of card to buy.
Discover is confirmed. Hop is not established.
  • The Discover card covers full entry. That is settled.
  • Whether the Hop card covers MACA has not been established. It is a central address, so the day-trip exclusions do not apply — but it is not named in any published Hop attraction list either.
  • This page does not claim it either way. Ask at the desk if you are holding a Hop card, rather than reading silence as a no.
Bring headphones, and expect stairs
  • The audio guide is included, in twenty languages, and it is good — reviewers rate it the part that makes the exhibition make sense. It downloads to your own phone.
  • Headphones are not sold on site. Bring a pair or you are listening on a speaker in a gallery.
  • The museum runs over several floors on steep, narrow stairs. Coat and bag storage is included at the desk; lockable storage is rented separately.
It is a graffiti show with Banksy in it
  • The title is the exhibition: Banksy and Street Art, The Early Years. Visitors who came for a Banksy retrospective have said so in reviews, and the museum's answer is that the rest of the room is the artists who shaped him.
  • Go for the arrival of graffiti as a whole and it delivers. Go for Banksy alone and part of it will feel like context.
  • It is a reading-and-listening museum, so younger children tire of it faster than the subject matter suggests.
What it costs without a card
  • Adult admission is €21 (160 DKK), which makes it one of the more expensive central venues.
  • Students pay 135 DKK and under-12s are free.
  • Toldbodgade 12, about five minutes on foot from Marmorkirken or Kongens Nytorv.
Getting there

How to get to MACA

Toldbodgade, between Amalienborg and the harbour. Five minutes from two metro stations.

Copenhagen Card
Discover card
✓ Metro M3 to Marmorkirken, then about five minutes past Amalienborg. The fare is covered.
✓ Or M1, M2, M3 or M4 to Kongens Nytorv, a slightly longer walk through Nyhavn.
✓ Buses along Store Kongensgade stop a few minutes away, and are covered.
✓ From the airport — M2 direct to Kongens Nytorv, roughly 15 minutes. Covered on Discover.
Copenhagen Card
Hop card
? Whether the Hop card covers entry here is not confirmed. MACA is not named in any published Hop attraction list, and an unlisted venue is not the same as an excluded one — check at the desk.
✓ The hop-on hop-off bus stops at Kongens Nytorv and along the harbour front nearby.
✗ The metro and city buses are not on the Hop card, so an airport arrival is a separate ticket.
The Frederiksstaden cluster
  • The Amalienborg Museum is five minutes away in Christian VIII’s palace, and on both cards.
  • Design Museum Denmark is on Bredgade, a similar distance, with a late Thursday opening.
  • Kunsthal Charlottenborg is at the head of Nyhavn, though it closes for long stretches between exhibitions — check the dates.

Common questions

MACA Museum — card FAQ

Is MACA Museum included with the Copenhagen Card?

The Discover card covers full entry, including Banksy and Street Art: The Early Years. Adult admission without a card is €21 (160 DKK); students pay 135 DKK and under-12s are free. Hop coverage has not been established either way.

Is MACA Museum open on Mondays?

MACA opens every day of the year, Mondays included. Hours change with the season rather than the weekday: 10:30am to 8pm from April to September, and 10:30am to 6pm from October to March. The summer evening opening is later than most central museums manage.

Do I need to book MACA Museum in advance with the Copenhagen Card?

Nothing needs booking. Show the QR code in the Copenhagen Card app at the desk and walk in. There is no timed entry, though the Banksy exhibition draws crowds at weekends.

Can I visit MACA Museum twice on the same Copenhagen Card?

One scan per attraction applies, so this is a single visit per card. The temporary exhibition and the rest of the museum are one ticket rather than two, so there is nothing to be gained by splitting a visit across days.

How do I get into MACA Museum with the Copenhagen Card?

Show the live QR code in the Copenhagen Card app at the entrance and let staff scan it. Your booking confirmation email is not your card, and a screenshot of the QR code will not scan — it has to be the app itself, which works offline once activated.
